The demand for innovative housing solutions has pushed 3D printed homes built from recycled plastics into the spotlight, offering the ability to construct a house in just a matter of hours.

Azure Printed Homes Showcases the X_180 Model

According to real estate media outlet Realtor.com, Southern California-based Azure Printed Homes recently participated in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Innovation Housing Showcase on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where they displayed their mobile tiny home model, the ‘X_180’.

Measuring 180 square feet, the studio-style X_180 is designed to be loaded onto a vehicle chassis and transported to different locations. The innovative dwelling was previously named one of TIME magazine’s Best Inventions, with a starting price of $69,900.

However, actual installation is subject to local building permits and zoning regulations, and buyers may incur additional expenses for transportation and site preparation beyond the base price.

The Future of Affordable Housing and ADUs

During the event, company co-founder Gene Eidelman emphasized to visitors that the housing construction industry is in dire need of a new approach. He explained that utilizing 3D printing technology allows a home to be printed in just hours, uniquely using recycled plastic as its primary raw material rather than traditional building methods.

Industry observers note that these compact units are drawing strong interest from glamping facility operators and are increasingly being utilized as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) installed on existing residential properties.

With persistent housing shortages and high construction costs continuing to challenge many regions, the potential application of 3D printing technology is gaining significant momentum as a viable alternative for creating additional living spaces.
