Lee Byung-hun Returns as a Battle-Hardened Warrior in ‘Nambeol’
Global icon Lee Byung-hun is trading his polygon mask for a sword. On May 6, 2026, Hive Media Corp. announced that Lee will star in the upcoming martial arts action film ‘Nambeol’ (tentative title). Set in the early Joseon Dynasty, the film is being described as a “hard-boiled” period piece that focuses on raw, realistic combat rather than stylized choreography.

A Suicide Mission to Tsushima Island
In ‘Nambeol’, Lee Byung-hun portrays Im Eok, the stoic and unyielding leader of a band of nine warriors. The plot follows this diverse group as they embark on a perilous journey across the sea to Tsushima Island. Their mission? To rescue Korean captives kidnapped by ruthless Japanese pirates during a time of frequent coastal raids.
For Lee Byung-hun, this marks a significant return to the martial arts genre, following his acclaimed performance in Memories of the Sword (2015). Fans are eager to see how the 55-year-old actor will bring his signature intensity to the role of a commander with years of battlefield experience.
The Directorial Debut of a Visual Master
What makes ‘Nambeol’ one of the most anticipated projects of 2026 is the man behind the camera. The film marks the directorial debut of Lee Mo-gae, the award-winning cinematographer behind blockbusters like Exhuma (2024) and 12.12: The Day (2023).
Having previously collaborated with Lee Byung-hun on The Good, the Bad, the Weird and I Saw the Devil, Lee Mo-gae is expected to bring a dense, gritty texture to the screen. “Nambeol” is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin filming in the second half of this year.
