Korean Former University of Michigan Student Charged in Hidden Camera Case

Two Asian former University of Michigan students have been charged in separate sex crime cases, and one of them has been identified as Korean.

Michigan news outlet MLive reported on May 7 that Hyunbin Jung, 26, was scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing in Washtenaw County court on May 12.

Jung had been enrolled in a master’s program in data science at the University of Michigan until March, but has since withdrawn from the school, according to the report.

Jung has been charged with first-degree home invasion and capturing an image of an unclothed person.

According to the report, Jung was caught last June secretly recording a female student while she was showering at Munger Graduate Residences, a dormitory for University of Michigan graduate students.

The victim reportedly discovered a cellphone taped near a small window close to the ceiling after she finished showering and was leaving the bathroom.

After noticing something suspicious, the woman went to a shared restroom. A short time later, she found Jung holding a cellphone with black duct tape attached to it and a foldable step stool, according to the report.

The woman confronted Jung and, while checking his cellphone, allegedly found several videos that appeared to have been recorded inside her room.

Jung is also facing separate charges of possessing child sexual exploitation material and using a computer to commit a crime.

Another former University of Michigan student has also been charged in a similar case.

Police began investigating after receiving a tip that an IP address in Ann Arbor, where the university is located, had accessed child sexual exploitation material.

The investigation led to the arrest of Juntao Wu, 21, a Chinese student who had been pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Wu has also been charged and is going through court proceedings. He has since withdrawn from the University of Michigan.
