Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Recall Hits 54K Sedans

High Volts, High Heat: Hyundai’s Eco-Friendly Sedan Under Fire

Hybrid vehicles are currently soaring in popularity among commuters looking to dodge steep prices at the gas pump. However, thousands of eco-friendly drivers will soon need to make an unexpected pit stop at the dealership.

Hyundai Motor America has officially issued a voluntary safety recall impacting 54,337 units of its popular Elantra Hybrid sedan in the United States. According to safety documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a critical high-voltage electrical architecture component is prone to dangerous overheating, creating a distinct risk of vehicle fires.

The safety campaign focuses specifically on newer models, casting a wide net over certain 2024 through 2026 model year Elantra Hybrid (HEV) vehicles manufactured between late 2023 and the end of 2025.

Inside the Defect: The Transistor Failure Location

The technical root of the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid recall lies directly within the brains of the vehicle’s electrical powertrain—the Hybrid Power Control Unit (HPCU).

The HPCU serves as the ultimate electronic traffic controller, managing power conversion and directing electricity to specific components across the hybrid drivetrain system.

The Remedy: A Free Software Patch for Owners

Thankfully, addressing this fire risk does not involve intensive mechanical tearouts or lengthy delays waiting for backordered physical parts.

Hyundai plans to rectify the defect entirely through an optimized software patch. Dealership technicians will install a free update to the HPCU software to prevent the transistor from ever reaching critical temperature thresholds.

Official customer notification letters are scheduled to land in mailboxes starting July 13, 2026. However, affected drivers do not necessarily have to wait until July to take action:

  • VIN Verification: Concerned owners can immediately input their 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into the official NHTSA Recalls Portal to confirm if their sedan is included.

  • Customer Support: Owners can reach out directly to Hyundai Customer Service toll-free at 1-855-371-9460 to check campaign status or schedule a priority appointment with a local dealership service center.
