Korean Air Newark Route: Potential Return After 25-Year Pause

Direct to New Jersey: Korean Air Pushes to Resume Newark Service After 25 Years

Korean Air is taking regulatory steps to resume direct passenger service between Incheon International Airport (ICN) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey.

If approved and launched, the route will mark Korean Air’s return to Newark after a 25-year hiatus, resurrecting direct flights that have been suspended since 2001.

Industry sources report that Korean Air formally applied for operating approval for the Incheon–Newark route with South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in June. Late last month, the carrier submitted supplementary documentation and initiated required fare filing procedures.

However, airline officials emphasize that final operational approval has not yet been granted, and exact launch timelines and weekly flight frequencies remain under review.

Key Historical & Operational Timeline

  • August 1996: Korean Air launches its initial service connecting Gimpo International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport.

  • Early 2001: Service transitions to Incheon International Airport following its official opening.

  • Late 2001: Direct flights on the Newark route are suspended.

  • June–July 2026: Korean Air files route approval applications, supplementary documentation, and fare filings with transport authorities.

Sharpening Competition in the New York-New Jersey Corridor

A potential return by Korean Air to Newark Liberty International Airport holds significant appeal for travelers across the tri-state area. Located closer to major Korean American population centers in northern New Jersey, Newark serves as a convenient alternative to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The move would also heighten market competition along the Incheon–New York/New Jersey corridor:

Incheon (ICN) – Newark (EWR) Carrier Landscape

  • Korean Air: Regulatory application submitted; pending final Ministry approval and schedule confirmation.

  • Air Premia: Currently operating direct flights between Incheon and Newark.

  • United Airlines: Launching direct service on the Incheon–Newark route in September.

“While no official announcement has been issued yet, the New York and New Jersey region maintains consistently strong passenger demand,” noted a representative from Korean Air’s U.S. West Coast branch. “Newark Liberty International Airport remains a top candidate whenever network expansions are under consideration.”
