Uber Introduces Live Video Streaming Feature for Teen Accounts
Uber has rolled out a new safety tool enabling parents and guardians to monitor their minor children in real time via live video while traveling alone.
The rideshare company announced the addition of a live video streaming feature to its “Teen Accounts” service. The update allows linked parents or guardians to view live footage of the vehicle’s rear passenger area directly from their smartphones during active trips.
Video streaming is captured through the front-facing camera on the driver’s smartphone, positioned to view the back seat. Live feeds are accessible only when qualified drivers choose to enable the streaming feature.
Access to the video stream is strictly restricted to parents or guardians linked to the specific Teen Account. The live feed automatically terminates when the ride ends, and footage cannot be replayed or reviewed post-trip by parents.
However, in the event of a reported safety incident, Uber retains access to encrypted video logs to assist in official investigations.
Real-Time Notifications and Driver Opt-In Controls
When a teen’s ride begins, linked parents receive a push notification if the assigned vehicle supports live video streaming. Parents can then tune into the live feed at any point during the trip through the Uber app.
To maintain transparency, both the teen passenger and the driver receive an in-app notification whenever a parent begins viewing the live stream.
Driver participation in the program is entirely voluntary, as individual drivers retain full discretion over whether to turn on the streaming function. Consequently, parents will not know if a trip offers live video capability until the ride actually commences and the driver is assigned.
Initial Rollout and Future Expansion Plans
The live video feature has initially launched across nine select regional markets, including Atlanta, Orlando (Florida), Phoenix, and Rhode Island.
Uber announced plans to expand the safety feature nationwide to additional markets, including California, over the coming weeks.
