Korean Teenager Rescued in Vietnam After Kidnapping

A Korean teenager rescued in Vietnam recently highlights the escalating dangers associated with overseas gambling debts and illegal loan sharks. Last month in Hanoi, a South Korean teenage girl was kidnapped by local loan sharks after her father, a corporate expatriate working in Vietnam, failed to pay off debts accumulated from local gambling. The victim’s ordeal ended swiftly thanks to a quick-headed local tutor who alerted the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Hanoi. Embassy staff, deployed police officers, and Vietnamese public security forces successfully located and rescued the teenager on the very day of the report. Currently, six South Korean police officers are dispatched in Vietnam to assist with crimes involving Korean nationals.

Father Flees Vietnam Amid Severe Personal Threats

Fearing for his safety, the victim’s father abandoned his daughter and flew back to South Korea alone just one day after the kidnapping occurred. With the mother already residing in South Korea, the father’s sudden departure left the teenager entirely isolated from her family. Fortunately, the victim safely returned to South Korea ten days later. South Korean police and diplomatic authorities are currently reviewing whether to launch a formal investigation into the father’s habitual gambling and the exact scale of his debts. Diplomatic missions across Southeast Asia continue to issue urgent warnings regarding overseas gambling, as illegal casino rings frequently resort to kidnapping, detention, and extreme violence, forcing victims to sign exorbitant promissory notes ranging from 167% to 300% of their original debt principals. Authorities remind travelers that under South Korea’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, habitual gambling overseas remains punishable by domestic law with up to three years in prison or a fine of up to approximately $14,500 USD (20 million KRW).
