Tragic Loss of a Korean senior in Canada
An 85-year-old Korean senior has tragically lost his life after being struck by a stray bullet during a youth-involved shooting incident in Canada, according to local authorities.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) of the BC Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on September 8 that Chang-yong Cho (85) was killed in the shooting that occurred on August 30 in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Police initially responded to reports of a gunshot near the intersection of 18th Avenue and Humphries Street at approximately 1:30 AM on the day of the incident. However, officers did not locate any victims or suspects at the scene.
Later that afternoon at around 4:00 PM, police conducted a welfare check on Cho, who resided in an apartment complex one block away from the shooting site, and discovered him dead inside his home.
Police Investigation and Family Appeal
Initial investigations by IHIT revealed that Cho was struck and killed by a stray bullet fired during the early morning shootout. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between teenagers and are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances and identify those involved.
In a public statement released on September 9, Choโs son, Justin David Cho, expressed profound grief. โIt is still difficult to understand how such a senseless act could happen,โ he said, appealing to anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.
He added, โMy father was a man of deep Christian faith, gentle character, and consistent kindness. Losing him in such a shocking way has completely shattered our family’s hearts.โ
