Coupang Rejects Consumer Dispute Mediation
Coupang data breach compensation demands face a major roadblock as the South Korean e-commerce giant officially rejected a consumer dispute mediation proposal requiring a payout of 100,000 KRW (approx. $75 USD) per affected customer. Industry sources reported on September 16, 2026, that Coupang submitted a formal written refusal to the Korea Consumer Agency’s Consumer Dispute Mediation Committee.
Massive Financial Impact and Previous Compensation
The collective dispute mediation involved 50 consumers seeking damages for last year’s massive security incident. If Coupang had accepted the recommendation, the payout could have extended to all 33.7 million affected users, driving total compensation liabilities to an estimated 3.7 trillion KRW (approx. $2.7 billion USD). Coupang defended its decision by highlighting that it previously implemented a voluntary compensation plan, providing 50,000 KRW shopping vouchers to all 33.7 million impacted individuals, totaling approximately 1.68 trillion KRW.
Civil Lawsuits Expected Following Rejection
Civil society organizations, including the Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice and People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy through the ‘Joint Action for a Safe Coupang,’ sharply criticized the company’s refusal during a press conference. Activists argued that Coupang is intentionally dodging further financial responsibility, forcing victims to seek justice through individual or class-action civil lawsuits.
