Expanding Access to New York City Public Restrooms
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially announced that construction and installation are underway for 17 New York City public restrooms across the city’s five boroughs. This rollout marks the initial phase of Mayor Mamdani’s ambitious plan announced last January to establish 1,100 portable public restrooms backed by a $4 million investment.
These newly introduced facilities fully meet ADA accessibility standards and come equipped with sinks, climate control heating and cooling systems, and baby changing stations.
Smart Features and Operational Guidelines
Designed for urban convenience, the restrooms operate daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Access is granted via text message, QR codes, restroom network apps, and tap cards distributed through local communities. To ensure high availability, each visit is limited to a 10-minute maximum, signaled by audio chimes and flashing alert lights as the time expires.
Because these innovative portable units do not require direct sewage or power infrastructure connections, they can be easily deployed, relocated, or removed based on specific neighborhood needs. The city is running a one-year pilot program, with potential for further expansion in late 2027 if successful.

The new New York City public restrooms are strategically positioned across all five boroughs: Queens (Northern Boulevard at 31st and 54th Streets, 34th Avenue at 64th Street, Astoria Boulevard at 31st Street); Manhattan (Cooper Square, Malcolm Plaza, Delancey and Suffolk Streets intersection, Plaza Alianza Dominicana); Brooklyn (Columbus Park, Milestone Park, Fulton and Truxton Streets intersection, Avenue C Plaza); Bronx (Yankee Stadium, Admiral Farragut Playground, Mapes Park, Monsignor Raul Del Valle Square); and Staten Island (North Shore Esplanade Park).
