Bibigo Kimbap US Sales Jump 59%
The popularity of Bibigo kimbap is experiencing a resurgence in the United States, driven by a renewed wave of interest in Korean cuisine. CJ CheilJedang announced on August 1 that its ‘Bibigo kimbap’ US sales for the period from January to July surged by 59% compared to the same period last year.
Retail Expansion and Market Growth
The number of retail stores carrying the product also expanded significantly, jumping 145% from 1,924 stores last year to 4,734 stores this year. A CJ CheilJedang official noted that interest in K-food is rising in the US, prompting the company to strengthen local marketing efforts. Korean frozen kimbap first gained viral popularity through social media platforms in 2024.
Future Outlook for K-Frozen Kimbap
According to the Korea Agro-Trade & Food Export Information (KATI), US exports of Korean frozen kimbap reached $2.2 million (approx. 3 billion won) in 2024, a 1550% increase year-over-year. Although sales briefly dipped last year, demand is rebounding thanks to the synergy with K-content, including an appearance in the animated hit ‘K-Pop: Demon Hunters’. Capitalizing on the high demand for convenience foods in the US, CJ CheilJedang plans to introduce new products featuring authentic Korean ingredients alongside its existing bulgogi and spicy bulgogi flavors.
