Hurricane Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, is gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico while moving northward, prompting a statewide state of emergency in Georgia.
Severe Weather Warnings Across Georgia
The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that central and northern Georgia, including Metro Atlanta, face an increasing threat from the hurricane. Flood watches, flash flood risks, heavy rain, strong winds, and potential tornadoes are expected from Friday evening through Sunday morning. Wind advisories and tropical storm warnings have also been issued for western, central, and southwestern regions.
State of Emergency and Preparations
Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency for all of Georgia, authorizing the mobilization of up to 500 National Guardsmen if necessary. Disaster management authorities have urged residents to prepare for potential power outages, and Metro Atlanta events are already experiencing disruptions.
Storm Path and Forecast
Currently located northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula, Category 1 Hurricane Isaias is forecast to intensify into a Category 2 storm before making landfall along the northern Gulf Coast. Central and northern Georgia will see increasing clouds and winds on Friday, with widespread rain arriving Friday night and continuing through the weekend. While total rainfall is generally expected to be 1 to 3 inches, some areas could receive up to 5 inches, and southwestern Georgia may see up to 10 inches of rain.
