A 30-year-old man has been found guilty of attempting to steal ownership of a $4.8 million beach home using forged real estate documents in Ventura County real estate fraud.
Guilty Verdict for Forged Property Documents
According to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, Cambray Antoine Holloway, 34, was found guilty by a jury on the 30th of last month of submitting false or forged documents regarding a luxury home in Oxnard Shores.
Prosecutors stated that Holloway submitted a falsely notarized grant deed to the Ventura County Clerk and Recorder’s Office in July of last year, attempting to register himself as the owner of the property.
Investigation into the Fake Ownership Claim
The home was owned by a Limited Liability Company (LLC), and investigations revealed that the actual owners had never given Holloway permission to transfer or claim ownership of the property.
According to prosecutors, the submitted real estate documents contained multiple discrepancies and lacked the signature of a grantor authorized to transfer ownership. When investigators contacted the actual owners, they stated they had never approved the transfer.
Repeated Attempts to Claim the Property
Despite this, Holloway reportedly visited the home multiple times, insisting he was the owner. Court records show he called a locksmith at least twice to change the front door locks, presenting the same fraudulent documents during the process.
Ventura County Deputy District Attorney Megan Mahoney stated, “This case involved an attempt to take over a $4.8 million home with just a few pieces of paper, where the defendant claimed ownership he did not possess and used it in a deed.”
She added, “This guilty verdict demonstrates the importance of protecting the integrity of public records and holding individuals accountable for using false information to acquire others’ property.”
Bail and Sentencing
Holloway was taken into custody immediately following the verdict, with bail set at $20,000.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held on the 28th at the Ventura County Superior Court.
