Although the strength of tropical cyclone Rachel has weakened, the risk of flooding in the Southern California coastal flood advisory areas continues through tomorrow (the 13th).
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood advisory for the coasts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties until 2 PM tomorrow. Authorities downgraded the flood warning to an advisory at 3 PM on the 11th.
Although the alerts have been downgraded, high waves and high tides continue to pose flooding risks in low-lying coastal areas such as Malibu, Long Beach, and Newport Beach.
In Long Beach, heavy waves breached coastal barriers, flooding homes and roads, leading to a series of damages. City authorities completely prohibited entry and habitation in eight buildings and issued use restrictions for one additional building.
Although floodwaters on Newport Beach roads receded after the morning high tide on the 11th, access to the Newport and Balboa piers and some beaches remains restricted.
