[OSEN=Kim Chae-yeon] Actor Park Yoon-ho shared his thoughts on greeting viewers through the Netflix series Park Yoon-ho star-making project ‘The Field Mouse’.

Recently, Park Yoon-ho conducted an interview for the Netflix series ‘The Field Mouse’ at the OSEN office located in Mapo-gu, Seoul.

‘The Field Mouse’ is a mystery tracking thriller that reinterprets Korea’s traditional folk tale ‘The Rat That Ate Fingernails’ with a modern sensibility. It achieved box office success by ranking first in the global non-English show category within two weeks of its release and entering the Netflix TOP 10 in 45 countries.

Park Yoon-ho played the role of Yoo-min, a character intertwined with Moon-jae (played by Ryu Jun-yeol) since the past. As the plot progressed, hidden truths between the two were gradually revealed, and Yoo-min’s complex emotions toward Moon-jae were conveyed, delivering a rich narrative.

On this day, regarding the great love ‘The Field Mouse’ received after its release, Park Yoon-ho confessed, “Actually, I couldn’t really feel it because I was busy shooting my next project right after the release. Doing interviews for ‘The Field Mouse’ this time feels different and makes it more meaningful. It’s a project that leveled up much more than I expected, so I think it became a great turning point.”

Park Yoon-ho shared that he joined ‘The Field Mouse’ after auditioning, saying, “I auditioned for the role of Yoo-min from the beginning. We went through up to three rounds of auditions, and as the number of people decreased toward the end, I felt we were getting closer, so I worked harder and kept my spirits up. After the third audition, I felt like I was going to get the part. The director arranged a meeting with actress Song Soo-i and said, ‘You guys are going to do it.’ It felt like a pleasant surprise.”

When asked about his romance chemistry with actress Song Soo-i, Park Yoon-ho recalled, “Actually, we couldn’t meet often, so it was awkward at first. But the director told us, ‘You guys need to do romance,’ and I remember asking various staff members for advice. The director and I constantly discussed what kind of imagery would look pretty, and we faced unexpected difficulties along the way.”

Having previously showcased romantic chemistry with actress Lee Jae-in in ‘Unknown Seoul’, Park Yoon-ho laughed as he shared, “Right at the moment it transitioned into romance, adult acting came up, so I didn’t really think of it as a romance. When I was talking to Jae-in and said, ‘I keep only doing genre projects, I’ve never done romance,’ she scolded me by saying, ‘Unknown Seoul is a romance.’”

When asked if he has any greed for romance acting, he said, “I definitely do. My fans want it too, and while I thought I had constantly pursued and done new things until now, I want to try romance or romantic comedy genres as well. I want to try a variety of things.”

The twist ending in ‘The Field Mouse’ where Park Yoon-ho’s character Yoo-min turns out to be the actual ‘field mouse’ captured widespread attention. How was his chemistry with Ryu Jun-yeol, with whom he shared a 2-in-1 role?

Park Yoon-ho explained, “One of the pieces of advice the senior gave me was, ‘Since we are the same character, it would be good for you to also study the scenes of the field mouse.’ I referred to that part while studying the script. We matched our tones, and on days we had the same lines, I would contact him before filming to try changing lines and find ways to narrow the gap.”

He added, “I adjusted and matched the tone more delicately. I tried to reduce the differences in various ways.”

Yoo-min is a character who is both a victim and a perpetrator. When asked what kind of mindset he tried to portray him with, Park Yoon-ho stated, “Yoo-min was a truly pitiful friend, and from my perspective, I felt he was a victim. The impact was huge when his girlfriend made a poor choice. Ultimately, I thought the frustration and anger over the person he cherished making an extreme choice must have been immense. I think I was able to immerse myself in that aspect.”

Park Yoon-ho revealed, “I also watched the ending with that kind of breath. I acted thinking I was the victim, but after seeing the ending, neither Min-young nor Moon-jae were in a happy situation, and everyone was struggling. I realized that the choice of revenge and those emotions are not necessarily good things.”

He continued, “I think it gave us something to think about, and the more you watch, the more pitiful Yoo-min feels, but you also end up thinking, ‘Why did you do that?’ It would have been nice if it had been resolved early on.” However, when asked if he thinks he could take revenge like Yoo-min, he said, “Since it’s not a general behavior, it’s hard to gauge. Frankly speaking, the idea of reading a book next to a dead girlfriend while vowing revenge feels too far removed from reality.”

Furthermore, Park Yoon-ho shared, “I realized it even more after watching the project. That seeking revenge just ruins you… I think it’s right to hold back anger within boundaries and respond calmly.”
