In the recent midterm elections, Korean American lawmakers achieved historic milestones while facing mixed electoral fortunes across New York and New Jersey. Grace Lee made history as the first Korean American elected to the New York State Senate, securing an overwhelming victory in the 27th District with over 80% of the vote against Republican challenger Jason Murillo.
New York Legislative Races
In the New York State Assembly, Ron Kim of the 40th District secured an uncontested path to his eighth term, while Edward Lee fell short in the 36th District race against Democratic candidate Diana Moreno. In local county races, Julie Jin held a narrow lead in the Nassau County Legislature 9th District contest.
New Jersey Municipal Victories and Losses
New Jersey elections saw notable successes in heavily Korean American areas, led by Palisades Park Mayor Paul Kim, who secured a landslide re-election victory over Stephanie Chang. Running mates Lucy Yang and Justin Kang joined him in sweeping the local council seats. Meanwhile, other districts saw mixed outcomes, with some incumbent candidates facing defeats in close local races.
Federal Congressional Results
Amid a broader political landscape, at least three Korean American representatives secured federal positions. Dan Koh claimed victory in Massachusetts’ 6th District, becoming the seventh Korean American in US congressional history. Marilyn Strickland and Dave Min also advanced toward secure re-election victories in Washington and California, respectively, while Young Kim faced a tighter contest in her district.
