In the global gaming market, establishing a new intellectual property (IP) is fraught with challenges. It is even more difficult when dealing with a paid-package new IP rather than a proven franchise, especially in the notoriously unforgiving extraction shooter genre. However, Arc Raiders, developed by Nexon’s subsidiary Embark Studios, has completely shattered these expectations. Surpassing 16.3 million global sales within just one year of its official launch, Arc Raiders has captivated players worldwide and is now poised to leap beyond interactive entertainment into a massive global media franchise.

Launched globally on October 30, 2025, the game’s first year was defined by continuous records. It passed the rigorous standards of North American and European package markets to reach 16.3 million cumulative sales while earning critical acclaim. It scored 86 on Metacritic and earned OpenCritic’s top ‘Mighty’ title. The momentum carried over to awards ceremonies, capturing seven major trophies including The Game Awards 2025 (TGA), the Steam Awards, the D.I.C.E. Awards, and the BAFTA Games Awards.

While live-service games typically experience a sharp decline after launch, Arc Raiders achieved a reverse trend right before its first anniversary by releasing its largest expansion, ‘Frozen Trail,’ in early October. Introducing the first-ever dungeon-type content ‘Emperor’ and the massive airship ‘Frigate,’ the update pushed daily peak concurrent players on Steam past 180,000, rivaling its launch-day peak.

User-Driven Narrative and PvE Innovations

The fundamental engine behind the game’s longevity lies in its ‘user-driven narrative.’ The grappling hook allows 360-degree swinging mobility, breaking terrain limitations. Players invent creative physics-defying maneuvers, such as hooking onto flying small Arcs when escaping the Frigate. Furthermore, the camera gadget enables unique gameplay moments, allowing players to capture thrilling selfies during intense Reaper chases.

A temporary PvE matchmaking test held in mid-October sparked significant industry conversation, recording over 30 million rounds played. While extraction shooters offer high-risk, high-return thrills, excessive PvP stress can be a hurdle. This PvE test provided an alternative environment, gathering massive positive feedback that Embark Studios is now analyzing to broaden the game’s overall experience.

Expanding Beyond Gaming into Film and TV

The game’s remarkable success is now crossing virtual boundaries into Hollywood. Nexon recently signed an official partnership with Chernin Entertainment, the powerhouse production company behind ‘Ford v Ferrari’ and the ‘Planet of the Apes’ franchise. Through this collaboration, film and TV series based on Arc Raiders and The Finals are officially in development, bringing the immersive dystopian universes to the screen as part of a global multi-media franchise expansion.

Reflecting on the first anniversary, executive producer Alexander GrΓΈndal expressed deep gratitude to the global community of Raiders and promised to continue delivering innovative experiences across both games and screens in the next journey.
