When planning the big holiday meal, Mashed Potatoes continue to reign supreme as the favorite Thanksgiving side dish for residents in California, according to the fifth annual ‘State of the Sides’ report by Campbellβs Company.
Nationwide, stuffing and dressing took the top spot as the most popular Thanksgiving side, a position it has held since 2023. Following closely behind were mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, and macaroni and cheese.
Mac and cheese proved to be a crowd-pleaser across multiple generations. Approximately 57% of respondents called it a dish everyone can agree on, and it ranked as the number one favorite side for Gen Z for the second consecutive year. Additionally, 42% noted that leftovers are rare, while 46% love its quick and easy preparation.
The overall importance of side dishes is also shifting. Four out of five Americans reportedly enjoy making side dishes more than preparing the turkey itself, and nearly half said they would be fine omitting the turkey altogether.
The variety on the holiday table is expanding as well. About 86% of respondents plan to serve at least four different side dishes, marking a 16% point increase compared to 2023.
Family traditions still hold deep emotional value for many. Roughly 77% of Americans feel that side dishes passed down from grandparents create a meaningful connection to previous generations, while modern conveniences, new flavor combinations, and artificial intelligence recipes are increasingly shaping Thanksgiving menus.
