California Civic Media Program β€” The Korea Daily Selected for $18.75M Grant

California Civic Media Program

The California Civic Media Program has selected The Korea Daily as one of its inaugural grant recipients, marking a significant milestone supported by both the California state government and Google. This recognition highlights the media outlet’s strong dedication to in-depth investigative reporting and addressing crucial community issues, placing it alongside major regional publications.

Inaugural Grant Selection and Funding Details

The California Civic Media Program (CCMP) officially announced its first cohort of 214 media organizations selected for funding on November 2. The collaborative initiative between the state and Google aims to strengthen the foundational reporting infrastructure of local news outlets. Special emphasis is placed on covering everyday community issues, shedding light on underreported stories, and delivering trusted news to diverse linguistic populations.

A total of $18.75 million has been allocated for the entire program. Depending on reporting staff size and journalistic capacity, individual newsrooms will receive grants ranging from $20,000 to $250,000 over the course of a year. These funds are designated to expand on-the-ground reporting and enhance investigative journalism efforts.

Strengthening Local Journalism in Los Angeles

The prestigious list of selected media organizations features prominent outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, The Sacramento Bee, The Mercury News, and CalMatters. Within Los Angeles County alone, 35 news organizations, including The Korea Daily, were named to the roster.

State Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) Director Dee Dee Myers emphasized that the program serves as a critical turning point for reinforcing the reporting foundation of local media and supporting the essential role journalism plays in sustaining democracy.
