
Revolutionary Medical Collaboration in South Korea
An AI surgical robot has successfully collaborated with a human surgeon to complete a gallbladder procedure in just 10 minutes at a demonstration in South Korea. As lead surgeon Prof. Oh Nam-ki of Samsung Medical Center requested surgical tools during the live simulation, humanoid robot arms smoothly handed over instruments, illuminated the surgical site with a laparoscope, and retracted tissue with precision. Unlike traditional operating rooms staffed entirely by human residents and nurses, this breakthrough event featured two blue-scrubbed humanoid robots working seamlessly alongside the doctor.
The Future of Solo-Surgery and Patient Care
Unveiled as a world first by Samsung Medical Center, this physical AI-based robotic assistant system marks a major milestone in modern medicine. Part of South Korea’s national ‘Korean ARPA-H Project,’ the technology aims to combat essential medical staffing shortages. While global competitors in the US and China push for fully autonomous robotic surgeries, South Korea is focusing heavily on human-robot collaboration. This ‘solo-surgery’ model allows the lead surgeon to focus entirely on critical decision-making and complex techniques while robotic assistants handle secondary tasks. Researchers plan to expand these capabilities, targeting clinical trials by 2029 to help bridge regional medical disparities and emergency care gaps.
