Atlanta Spa Shooting Trial Back on Track as Death Penalty Case Resumes
Atlanta Spa Shooting Trial proceedings are moving forward again as the death penalty case against Robert Aaron Long, the gunman responsible for the 2021 Atlanta-area spa shootings that killed eight people, returns to court.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Long appeared in Fulton County Superior Court on June 1 for a status hearing focused on the composition of his defense team. The hearing was held to review whether the legal requirements for a capital murder case had been met.
Under Georgia law, defendants facing a potential death sentence must be represented by two qualified attorneys. Court proceedings had been delayed earlier this year after one of Long’s attorneys left the public defender’s office. A replacement attorney has now joined the defense team, allowing pretrial preparations to resume.
Death Penalty Sought in Fulton County Case
Long is already serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to the killings that occurred at a Cherokee County massage business in 2021. However, he still faces a separate prosecution in Fulton County for the shootings at two Atlanta-area spas.
Fulton County prosecutors have charged Long with 19 counts, including malice murder, felony murder, domestic terrorism, and related offenses. Prosecutors continue to seek the death penalty in the case.
Attack That Shocked the Nation
The shootings occurred in March 2021 at three massage businesses in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Eight people were killed, including four Korean victims and six women of Asian descent.
The attack sparked nationwide debate over anti-Asian violence and hate crimes, becoming one of the most significant incidents associated with the Stop Asian Hate movement in the United States. Prosecutors have argued that bias played a role in the killings, while Long has denied that race was a motivating factor.
What’s Next in the Atlanta Spa Shooting Trial?
The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for June 29 as the Atlanta Spa Shooting Trial continues through the pretrial phase. No trial date has yet been announced, but prosecutors remain committed to pursuing capital punishment if Long is convicted.
