With the new school year underway, Sacramento officials are stepping up efforts to improve traffic safety around school zones.
The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans, California Highway Patrol (CHP), Sacramento Police Department and the City of Sacramento recently launched the βABC for Safetyβ campaign along Marysville Boulevard in North Sacramento.
The campaign aims to remind drivers to stay alert around children, peBack-to-School destrians and cyclists as traffic increases around schools.
Officials are urging drivers to wait for children getting on and off school buses, give cyclists enough space and obey posted speed limits in school zones. Drivers are also encouraged to avoid distracted driving, including cellphone use.
CHP and the Sacramento Police Department will increase enforcement around school zones and school buses, focusing on speeding, failure to yield and other dangerous driving behaviors. Drivers must also stop when a school bus is stopped with its red flashing lights activated.
The campaign also highlights recent safety improvements along Marysville Boulevard. Underschool zone Sacramentoβs Vision Zero plan, the city invested approximately $1.4 million to reduce traffic lanes and add protected bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks and upgraded traffic signals. The state also provided an additional $518,000 for safety improvements along the corridor.
Officials are reminding drivers to allow extra time during school hours, slow down and remain alert for children and other vulnerable road users.
