Retirement living costs vary significantly depending on the region you choose to live in after leaving your career. Expenses can fluctuate by hundreds of thousands of dollars based on factors such as daily living costs, housing prices, and tax burdens. According to financial information firm GO Banking Rates, a recent comprehensive analysis of living expenses, housing costs, quality of life, and senior-friendly infrastructure has identified the top five cities for retirement in 2026.
Midland, Michigan, secured the number one spot on the list. Also recognized as a top retirement destination by US News & World Report, Midland is praised for its lower-than-average cost of living and high quality of life. The median home price sits at approximately $206,000. Additional advantages include walkable neighborhoods and convenient access to nature and cultural facilities.
Homosassa Springs, Florida, was highlighted as a coastal city with relatively low living expenses. The median home price is around $220,000, complemented by nature preserves and excellent outdoor water recreation environments.
The Woodlands, Texas, was evaluated favorably for its residential environment and medical infrastructure. Key highlights include exceptional access to major medical facilities in Houston, alongside well-maintained parks, lakes, and cultural spaces. The median home price is about $474,000, and Texas also features no state income tax.
Rio Rancho, New Mexico, stands out for its relatively low cost of living and dry climate. The area offers well-established medical facilities, senior amenities, and a stable community atmosphere, with a median home price of approximately $310,000.
Asheville, North Carolina, is recognized as a city offering a rich blend of cultural facilities, natural environments, and medical accessibility. It features a milder climate and lower living expenses compared to coastal resort towns, with a Redfin-estimated median home price of about $442,000.
Experts advise that when choosing a retirement destination, individuals should carefully weigh multiple factors including housing prices, taxes, medical facilities, climate, and overall living costs.
