California Cool Air Rebate Program is now accepting applications, offering eligible drivers up to 90% off the cost of repairing broken vehicle air conditioners as extreme summer heat sweeps across the state.

The state-funded initiative is California’s only financial assistance program dedicated specifically to vehicle air conditioning repairs.

Officials say the program is designed to keep drivers and passengers safe during dangerous heat waves while also reducing refrigerant leaks that contribute to air pollution and climate change.

Who Qualifies?

To qualify for the California Cool Air Rebate Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a California resident
  • Own a 1993–2019 model-year vehicle
  • Drive a vehicle that uses R-134a refrigerant
  • Have a household income at or below 225% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $74,250 annually for a family of four)

Eligible drivers can receive up to 90% of approved repair costs, with a maximum benefit of $1,500 per vehicle.

Repairs must be completed at one of 456 certified repair shops participating in the program statewide.

How the Program Works

Drivers must first apply for the program and receive an approval letter before scheduling repairs.

Once approved, participants can take the approval notice to a participating repair facility to receive the discounted service.

The approval letter is mailed directly to the applicant before repairs begin.

Mike Tanner, director of the California Cool Air Rebate Program, said the initiative helps families stay safe while improving environmental protection.

“This program helps eligible households repair leaking vehicle air conditioning systems,” Tanner said. “Reliable cooling is especially important during periods of extreme heat, while repairing refrigerant leaks also helps reduce harmful emissions that affect air quality.”

Why It Matters This Summer

The California Cool Air Rebate Program, launched in 2024, comes as forecasters warn of another hot summer across much of the state.

For lower-income families, repairing a vehicle’s air conditioning system can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars, causing many drivers to postpone repairs despite dangerous temperatures.

State officials hope the rebate program will remove that financial barrier while improving public health and reducing pollution.

Drivers can check their eligibility, submit an application, and find participating repair shops by visiting the program’s official website(coolairrebate.org).
