California State Parks Pass Available at Public Libraries
California State Parks Pass holders can visit more than 200 participating state parks for free by borrowing a pass from a nearby public library.
Any California resident with a valid library card can participate in the program. Approximately 33,000 passes have been distributed to more than 1,100 public libraries statewide, including Los Angeles Public Library locations.
The state launched the park pass lending program as a pilot initiative in 2022 to make state parks more accessible to residents. In June, California secured $6.75 million in annual funding to continue operating the program.
How to Borrow a California State Parks Pass
Residents can borrow a pass using a library card issued in their own name. Those who do not have a card can apply for one at a public library near their home before requesting a pass.
Some libraries also lend backpacks containing basic hiking equipment along with the pass. Availability and included equipment may vary by location.
Because demand can be high, residents are advised to contact their preferred library before visiting. The lending period generally ranges from one to three weeks, depending on the library. Passes must be returned when the borrowing period ends.
Where the Pass Can Be Used
The California State Parks Pass is accepted at more than 200 participating state parks. It does not apply to national parks managed by the federal government, including Yosemite National Park, or to parks operated by local governments or private organizations.

The pass generally covers free vehicle day-use entry at eligible state parks. Other charges, programs or services may not be included.
Free Pass Available to Fourth-Grade Students
California public school students in the fourth grade may also qualify for the Free Fourth Grade Pass.
The program allows eligible students and accompanying family members to visit 54 designated state parks an unlimited number of times for up to 13 months.
