Consumer complaints about cereal bags being difficult to reclose and contents going stale easily have prompted Cheerios and Ziploc to introduce a brand-new resealable packaging design.

Cheerios Partners with Ziploc for PantrySeal

According to General Mills, the new product is called ‘Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal’ and replaces traditional cereal liners with a secure Ziploc-style sealing mechanism and an easy-pour spout. The innovative Cheerios Ziploc packaging aims to solve everyday breakfast frustrations.

Rollout and Walmart Availability

The new packaging will first roll out for Original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, available starting the 27th via Walmart’s website. Distribution will expand to other major retailers in the coming months. General Mills noted that it has received countless letters, emails, and social media messages over the years asking for easier-to-close cereal bags.

Shifting Trends in the Cereal Market

While resealable packaging is not entirely new to the cereal industryโ€”having been used previously for portable or single-serve optionsโ€”bringing it to flagship products marks a major step in packaging competition driven by consumer convenience. This change comes as traditional breakfast cereals face intense competition from sandwiches, yogurts, protein bars, and smoothies, with younger consumers increasingly treating cereal as a snack.
