Chicago has been named the “Best Big City in the U.S.” for an unprecedented 10 consecutive years, according to the readers of the world-renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.

Maintaining the top spot in this category every year since 2017, Chicago achieved this historic milestone following a survey that gathered approximately 80,000 responses covering travel sectors such as hotels, cities, airlines, and cruises.

Chicago received high praise for offering a diverse blend of cultures, culinary experiences, unique architecture, and rich tourist attractions all in one place. From art galleries, museums, theaters, and sports stadiums to the Chicago Riverwalk and the shores of Lake Michigan, the city offers countless sights. Its 77 distinct neighborhoods feature global cuisines and cultures, complemented by a vibrant local identity rooted in blues, jazz, house music, and improv comedy.

Growing tourism further underscores Chicago’s popularity. According to Choose Chicago, the city welcomed 56.8 million visitors last year. Visitor spending reached a record-shattering $21.5 billion, and the tourism industry helped sustain 135,360 local jobs. The city’s strong accessibility via O’Hare International Airport and the dense concentration of major attractions downtown were also cited as major advantages.

Rounding out the top spots for this year’s “Best Big City” list, San Francisco placed 2nd, followed by Milwaukee in 3rd, Portland in 4th, and New Orleans in 5th. Washington D.C., San Diego, Columbus, New York, and Seattle ranked 6th through 10th, respectively.

To commemorate a decade of consecutive victories, the City of Chicago proclaimed October 10 as “Best Big City Day.” A celebratory event featuring live performances was scheduled near the City Winery on the Chicago Riverwalk.
