Rebuilding After the Eaton Fire
Twenty months after turning to ashes, a family’s dream home has risen again, marking a major milestone for victims of the Eaton Fire. Korean-American Richard Kang and his wife Julie recently completed the reconstruction of their Altadena residence, which was destroyed during the catastrophic blaze in January 2025. The new 2,744-square-foot home features four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, expanding their living space by roughly 10% compared to before the disaster.
Reflecting on the journey, Kang expressed deep gratitude, stating that seeing a new house stand where only ashes once remained felt like an immense blessing. The family had originally moved into the 272-home La Vina gated community in November 2021, only to see their daily lives upended on January 7, 2025, when the Eaton Fire swept through the area.
Community Collaboration and Fast-Track Construction
While Kang was away on a business trip, his wife and daughter safely evacuated their home. After temporary housing arrangements in San Marino, the path to recovery unexpectedly began inside a La Vina residents’ Google chat room. When 52 homes in the community were destroyed, neighbors began sharing vital information regarding insurance, debris removal, permits, and contractors. Through this network, they learned that Brookfield Residential, the original developer of La Vina, intended to spearhead a joint reconstruction effort for affected families.
Brookfield handled architectural designs, permits, and material procurement for six participating households, including the Kangs. By utilizing pre-approved layout designs and streamlining construction, the team successfully completed all six homes within six months and within budget. On September 21, 2026, a special ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the newly finished property, attended by LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Brookfield CEO Adrian Foley, and neighboring residents.
A Long Road Ahead for Fire Victims
While the Kangs successfully returned to their neighborhood, the broader region continues its monumental recovery. According to CAL FIRE data, the Eaton Fire destroyed 9,419 structures and damaged another 1,076, with residential losses alone totaling around 6,000 homes. LA County statistics from July 2026 show that 100 homes have been fully rebuilt, while 1,796 remain under construction as families slowly work to reclaim their everyday lives.
