Genesis has officially launched the GV80 Hybrid on October 6, marking the brand’s first-ever hybrid model. Priced at 76.8 million won (based on a 5% individual consumption tax), the vehicle comes in about 5 million won cheaper than initial industry projections in the 80 million won range. This release is widely anticipated to serve as a turning point for Hyundai, which has experienced severe sales sluggishness this year.

The GV80 Hybrid combines a 2.5-liter turbo engine with a hybrid system featuring a starter motor and drive motor in a parallel configuration. The system’s combined output reaches 352 horsepower, a 16% increase over the standard 2.5 turbo model. Its combined fuel efficiency for the rear-wheel-drive (2WD) 5-seater model is 12 km per liter, marking a 29% improvement. Considering the 76-liter fuel tank, the vehicle can travel up to 912 km on a single tank. It records a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time (zero-to-hundred) of 7.1 seconds.

While the hybrid vehicle operates with both a motor and an engine, the role of the electric motor has been significantly expanded. Notably, it is engineered to actively utilize EV mode driving in low-speed sections up to 30 km/h, enabling quiet operation in underground parking lots, traffic-heavy downtown areas, and congested routes.

The vehicle also introduces the ‘Hybrid Terrain Performance’ technology, a Hyundai Motor Group first. If the vehicle determines that the motor alone lacks sufficient driving force on inclines, unpaved roads, or other rough terrains, it automatically adds the most appropriate engine drive power. Additional features include ‘Hybrid Hierarchical Predictive Control’ to manage battery charge and operate efficient driving modes by anticipating the route and road conditions, as well as EV-like convenience functions such as onboard multimedia usage while the engine is turned off.

Adding the four-wheel-drive model costs an additional 3.7 million won, while the 6-seater configuration adds 2.5 million won. Popular options like the ‘Popular Package’ (including Head-Up Display and Driving Assistance Package) cost 4.1 million won, and a panoramic sunroof is priced at 1.4 million won. With popular option packages and the 6-seater configuration, actual sales are expected to primarily fall in the low-to-mid 80 million won range.

Hyundai hopes to recover sales momentum by rolling out consecutive new models like the ‘Avante’ and ‘Tucson’ in the latter half of the year. From January to September this year, Hyundai sold 2,886,763 vehicles globally, down 7% year-on-year. Domestic sales during the same period plummeted 16.3% to 448,181 units, dropping to levels comparable to the 2008 global financial crisis. Industry experts attribute the slump to production setbacks from strikes and parts plant fires, intensified competition with imported cars, and a lack of fresh lineup updates to attract consumers due to aging core models.

Lee Si-hyuk, head of the Genesis Business Division, stated, “The GV80 Hybrid, as Genesis’s first hybrid, delivers powerful dynamic performance and EV-level quietness to provide a differentiated driving experience. We will continue to respond flexibly to market changes to meet customer demands.”,
