An ICE shooting in New York has sparked widespread outrage and immediate political fallout after federal immigration agents shot a 28-year-old Dominican Republic national during an enforcement operation in Marble Hill, northern Manhattan. The victim was inside a vehicle with his 5-year-old son at the time of the incident and sustained a gunshot wound just below his right ear, leading to his emergency hospitalization.
Mayor and Governor Demand Immediate Suspension of ICE Raids
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani strongly condemned the operation and called for an immediate halt to all ICE enforcement activities citywide. In a statement released following the incident, the mayor revealed that he urged President Donald Trump during a phone call to suspend ICE operations. Highlighting that the victim’s young child was present inside the vehicle, Mamdani emphasized that authorities would not stand by while federal agents terrorize local communities. Despite direct appeals to President Trump and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin, efforts to secure the victim’s release have not yet been successful.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul also addressed the crisis, stating she had discussed the shooting directly with federal leadership. Expressing profound outrage on behalf of New York residents, Hochul reiterated the demand to suspend ICE raids and formally requested the immediate release of body-worn camera footage to clarify the exact sequence of events.
Federal Authorities Defend Enforcement Action Amid Ongoing Investigation
The Department of Homeland Security defended the operation, stating that the target had a criminal history involving theft convictions, assault, robbery, narcotics, and weapons offenses. DHS officials asserted that the individual had ties to organized crime and blamed city sanctuary policies for allowing him to remain in New York. While DHS did not immediately clarify the exact circumstances leading to the gunfire or address the presence of the child in the vehicle, officials confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) have launched formal inquiries into the incident.
