The Shift in influencer marketing trends
With surging inflation increasing financial pressure on consumers, influencer marketing trends are undergoing a major transformation, moving away from luxury displays toward smart spending and practical saving tips. According to recent reports by ABC News, lifestyle and beauty influencers in the 2000s and 2010s heavily showcased extravagant shopping habits, luxury bags, and dedicated makeup spaces. However, the post-pandemic economic landscape and rising living costs have reshaped consumer interests.
A recent Pew Research Center survey revealed that only 24% of consumers rated economic conditions as very good or good, while 66% expressed concern over the rising prices of groceries and consumer goods. As consumer purchasing power diminishes, audiences are increasingly drawn to influencers who showcase affordable alternatives and creative ways to reuse existing items rather than promoting endless new purchases.
How Creators are Adapting to Budget-Conscious Audiences
A prime example of this shift is fashion expert and trend analyst Mandy Lee, who boasts over 900,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. In 2024, Lee introduced the ’75 Hard Style’ challenge, which encourages participants to avoid buying new clothes for 75 days and instead style different outfits using items they already own. According to Lee’s Instagram, over 70,000 people have participated since the challenge began.
In the beauty sector, affordable content is also thriving. Shelby Ann Bell, a bridal makeup artist based in Atlanta, has gained over 2.5 million TikTok followers by sharing makeup tutorials utilizing drugstore products instead of expensive luxury cosmetics. In an interview with ABC News, Bell shared that her childhood experiences of not being able to afford high-end makeup inspired her to connect with people seeking confidence and beauty despite financial hardships.
Additionally, content highlighting affordable alternatives with ingredients similar to luxury cosmetics is spreading rapidly. Influencer Pooja Jain, who holds a master’s degree in biomedical science and biotechnology along with experience in pharmaceutical science, recommends cost-effective beauty and skincare products based on cosmetic ingredient analysis. By breaking down high-end cosmetic ingredient labels and explaining the role of each component in simple terms, these creators are redefining digital influence to match economic realities.
