Citadel founder and CEO Ken Griffin Carnegie Mellon donation marks the largest single gift in American higher education history, totaling $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
Griffin announced on September 30 that $2 billion of the total $3 billion will be dedicated to constructing a brand-new CMU campus in Miami, Florida. The remaining $1 billion will be utilized to strengthen education and research at the Pittsburgh main campus in Pennsylvania, including expanding the computer science faculty and providing student financial aid.
Notably, CMU’s world-renowned School of Computer Science will be renamed the ‘Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science.’ The university plans to leverage the donation to recruit top-tier professors and researchers while expanding financial support to reduce student tuition burdens.
Griffin told Reuters that this represents ‘the largest single investment in higher education in American history,’ describing the donation as an ‘investment in excellence.’ CMU President Farnam Jahanian also expressed deep gratitude for Griffin’s vision and trust in the university’s potential.
The new campus will be established in the Wynwood area of Miami, located several miles north of Brickell, where Citadel’s headquarters is situated. Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with the first students expected to enroll in 2028. Upon completion, the campus plans to accommodate over 3,500 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, approximately 300 faculty members, and over 600 staff members.
CMU Miami will break away from traditional major-centric university operations, structuring its education and research around major challenges facing society. Key areas proposed include health and life sciences research, national security and strategic capabilities, and energy and climate resilience.
This donation goes beyond mere university facility expansion, serving as a milestone for CMUβa premier U.S. technology and research universityβto establish two core hubs connecting Pittsburgh and Miami.
