Kim Yoo-jung is captivating viewers with her powerful and convincing transformations in the tvN weekend drama ‘100 Days of Lies’ (written by Ryu Bo-ri, directed by Lee Yoon-jung and Kim Yoon-jin), where she plays Lee Ga-kyung, Gyeongseong’s top pickpocket and a secret spy infiltrated into the Japanese Government-General of Korea.
As Lee Ga-kyung, she seamlessly shifts between various identities, ranging from a petty thief to an interpreter and a fake lover depending on the situation. Kim Yoo-jung skillfully portrays both the fabricated facade she puts up to deceive others and the genuine emotions hidden underneath, delivering the true charm of ‘acting within acting.’
Lee Ga-kyung dismantles her opponents’ weaknesses with precise questions about time, remaining calm and composed even while uttering falsehoods. When acting as a petty thief, she softens the police’s guard with a sweet tone and eye-smiles, yet displays daring boldness when negotiating with Yoo So-ran (played by Kim Hyun-joo). Through these shifts, Kim Yoo-jung vividly brings out Lee Ga-kyung’s brilliant intellect and resourcefulness, with her greatest weapon undoubtedly being her ‘composed demeanor.’
When disguising herself as Geum Seo-hee, an interpreter at the Government-General, she reveals yet another face. She melts into the unfamiliar status with polite Japanese and a bright smile, while completely masking her emotions when interpreting for Geum Seok-joong (played by Kam Woo-sung). Her subtle expressions and controlled delivery while hiding her inner thoughts from Fukuda convey a palpable sense of tension.
Her witty charm shines even brighter when playing the fake lover to Yoo Philip (played by Lee Moo-saeng). She remains unfazed by sudden skinship, responding with a warm smile, and naturally drapes her arm around Philip’s neck in front of Sato Hideo (played by Jinyoung) to complete the persona of a devoted couple. The provocative line uttered to Sato Hideo—”Shall we not have an affair?”—highlights her audacious quest to fake affection. Her ability to effortlessly alter her gaze and tone for every opponent exposes Ga-kyung’s true colors while sparking curiosity about her hidden motives.
Kim Yoo-jung bridges the gap between her dual faces through playful expressions, restrained glances, and minute shifts in tone. Her persuasive acting allows the multifaceted nature of Lee Ga-kyung to naturally blend into a single character, maximizing the drama’s immersion.
