Korean Community Shootings Shock Dallas and Carrollton Communities
Korean Community Shootings have once again shaken the Dallas and Carrollton areas, where large Korean American communities have rapidly formed over the past several years following a sharp population increase.
The Dallas Korean Association said it plans to release a joint statement regarding the latest shooting incident alongside local organizations, including the Korean American Chamber of Commerce.
The latest tragedy has resurfaced painful memories for many Korean Americans in Texas, where a series of deadly gun-related incidents have repeatedly left members of the community injured or dead. Those incidents include the Allen outlet mall mass shooting in 2023, the Happy Day Lounge shooting in 2023, the Hair World Salon shooting in 2022, and the road rage killing of Jinil Shin in 2022.

Lee Sang-yoon, a former president of the Dallas Korean American Chamber of Commerce, said news of the shooting spread rapidly among local residents through KakaoTalk messages and phone calls.
“As soon as the shooting happened, people in the Korean community immediately started sharing updates through group chats and calls,” Lee said. “The suspect appeared to be involved in business, but he was not someone widely known for active involvement in the Korean community.”
Gun Violence Continues to Impact Texas Korean Americans
Texas has long maintained more permissive gun ownership laws compared to many other states, and concerns over gun violence have continued to grow within immigrant communities.
One of the most devastating incidents occurred in May 2023, when a gunman opened fire at the Allen Premium Outlets near Dallas. The tragedy drew nationwide attention after Korean American victims were identified among the dead.
The shooter, identified as Mauricio Garcia, reportedly fired at least 50 to 60 rounds during the attack. Eight people were killed at the scene, including a Korean American couple in their 30s and their 3-year-old son. Their 6-year-old son survived the massacre.
Just one month before the Allen outlet shooting, another deadly incident occurred inside Dallas Koreatown at Happy Day Lounge. Authorities said a 62-year-old man, identified as Jo Wan-baek, fatally shot the bar’s Korean American owner, Kang Hee-jung, during an argument while intoxicated.
At the time, the Dallas Korean community was still mourning the nightclub shooting when the Allen mass shooting occurred, deepening the collective grief across the area.
Previous Korean Community Shootings Left Lasting Trauma
The string of Korean Community Shootings also includes the 2022 Hair World Salon attack in Dallas Koreatown, where three Korean women — including employees and customers — were injured in a random daytime shooting.
According to investigators, the suspect suddenly entered the salon and fired at least four rounds.
Salon owner Jang Soo-jung later told local Korean media that two employees who suffered gunshot wounds eventually left the beauty industry and moved out of state due to severe psychological trauma. One of them reportedly still suffers from injuries that limit the use of one arm.
In another 2022 case, Korean American resident Jinil Shin was shot and killed during a roadside argument following a minor traffic accident near a freeway entrance in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Local business owner Robert Oh said many residents feel increasingly anxious as shootings continue to occur.
“Other than the gun violence, this is truly a great place to live,” Oh said. “But incidents like these keep happening, and the atmosphere in the Korean community has become much more subdued. Everyone is heartbroken by the repeated tragedies.”
