The deep roots of Korean art and the traditional spirit of Honam are crossing the Pacific to meet contemporary media art. The Korean media art exhibition titled ‘South, Space of Lines’ will be hosted by the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA, Director Hae-don Lee) and the Horanggagamu Creative Studio (Representative Heon-gi Jung) starting on the 28th and running through December 2.

Held under the theme ‘Beyond Time, Tradition into Contemporary Art’, this exhibition highlights the process by which traditional Southern school painting and literati paintingβ€”spanning from Yun Du-seo, Kim Jeong-hee, and Heo Ryeon to Heo Baek-ryeonβ€”are transformed and expanded into diverse media of modern art.

A total of 25 representative works, including paintings, installations, videos, and digital media art by master artists such as Heo Baek-ryeon, O Ji-ho, and Cho Bang-won as well as contemporary artists, will be showcased in large numbers.

The ‘line’ in the exhibition title goes beyond a formative element composing the canvas, symbolizing the flow connecting the past and present, tradition and modernity. It presents a scene where the traditional empty spaces and lines once drawn with ink and brush are newly reinterpreted today through light, data, and spatial language.

On the opening day, October 28 at 5 PM, a special lecture by Jeonnam Museum of Art Director Ji-ho Lee and a celebratory performance by Gwangju Nam-gu’s ‘Jangcheonha Art Troupe’ will take place, followed by the official opening ceremony at 6 PM.

The following day, October 29 at 6 PM, an ‘Artist Talk’ program is also scheduled to deeply share the creative worlds of the participating artists.

Director Hae-don Lee stated, “We have expanded tradition from a fossilized relic of the past into a living artistic resource interpreted through the original perspectives of contemporary artists,” adding, “We hope this will be an opportunity to experience the essence of Korean art and its future potential together.”
