In Olathe, a small city near Kansas City with a Korean-American population under 500, a unique ministry is making waves as a Korean pastor serving gomtang bridges cultures through food. Rev. Changhyun Kim, 35, balances his dual roles as a pastor at Modakbul United Methodist Church and a chef running the in-church restaurant known as ‘The Table.’ Local media outlet The Pitch recently highlighted how Kim serves comforting Korean brisket soup, or gomtang, to the local community.
From Living Room Services to Selling 250 Bowls Daily
Originally hailing from South Korea where his parents ran a small side-dish shop, Kim moved to Kansas City in 2017. Reflecting on his seminary days before military service, he recalled feeling inspired by the biblical calling to ‘feed my sheep,’ which led him to learn culinary arts. Starting with just six people in his living room, Kim began sharing meals to build relationships and spread Christ’s love. Today, operating out of a local church kitchen with support from Grace United Methodist Church, ‘The Table’ regularly sells 250 bowls on busy days at $13.70 per bowl. Proceeds directly fund church operations and support underprivileged groups in the community.
