A notorious LA Fairfax trash house that has sparked community complaints for years is once again surrounded by debris, prompting public health officials to launch a fresh site investigation.

Public Health Investigation and Community Complaints

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that it has received complaints regarding the current condition of the residential property located on Martel Avenue in the Fairfax district and will conduct an on-site inspection.

This property first became the center of major controversy in April 2024 when massive amounts of trash accumulated around the home. At the time, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass personally visited the scene and promised that such an issue would not be allowed to happen again.

Previous Cleanups and Ongoing Crisis

According to the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office, the property underwent cleanup operations twice following the mayor’s visit. However, the accumulation of garbage was spotted once again this past August. The house was previously declared a public health emergency by Mayor Bass.

In a statement, the Department of Public Health noted that it is aware of the current concerns and will inspect the property for trash and debris accumulation, potential sanitation issues, and signs of rodent or pest activity and nesting.

Property Owner Status

According to the Mayor’s Office, the property owner was undergoing evaluation in mental health court to determine competency to stand trial. The results of that psychological evaluation were not immediately available.
