LA Street Sweeping — City Considers Weekly Schedule Return

The City of Los Angeles is considering resuming weekly residential street cleaning.

The City of Los Angeles is pushing to restore residential LA street sweeping from bi-weekly back to a weekly schedule, following reductions made after the COVID-19 pandemic. The city is also addressing the ongoing issue of parking violation tickets being wrongly issued on days when no actual cleaning takes place.

On the 30th of last month, the LA City Council unanimously passed a motion instructing relevant departments to calculate the budget, personnel, and equipment needed to resume citywide weekly street sweeping.

LA reduced its regular street cleaning frequency from weekly to bi-weekly in 2021 due to workforce reductions and other impacts. However, the existing parking prohibition signs during scheduled cleaning times remained unchanged, leading to parking enforcement actions even on days without street sweeping. According to the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), more than 12,500 wrongful parking violation tickets have been issued in LA on days without street sweeping since 2021.

This latest motion also includes provisions to establish a refund procedure within 15 days for incorrectly issued tickets. Additionally, the city is exploring the introduction of text message and multilingual street cleaning alert services, as well as installing automatic license plate readers on street sweepers to better coordinate cleaning and parking enforcement.
