LAX flights grounded temporarily on the morning of the 14th as a severe air traffic control staff shortage continues to impact Southern California aviation. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the ground stop affected incoming flights destined for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) due to staffing constraints at the Southern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (SCT) facility.
Understanding the Southern California Airspace Shortage
The SCT facility oversees one of the busiest airspaces in the United States, managing air traffic from roughly 20 miles north of Burbank down to the U.S.-Mexico border, and from San Bernardino to Santa Catalina Island. While the initial ground stop notices were quickly removed from the FAA website and normal operations resumed, the incident follows hundreds of flight delays and dozens of cancellations from the previous day caused by similar staffing limitations.
