Legal Wrap-Up: Prosecutors Issue Suspended Indictment for Actress Lee Ha-nee Over Unregistered Agency
Prominent South Korean actress Lee Ha-nee (also known as Honey Lee) has officially cleared a major legal hurdle regarding her private management firm. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office recently decided to issue a suspended indictment (기소유예) for the actress, her husband and CEO Peter Jang, and her independent corporate label, Hope Project.
A suspended indictment is a formal prosecution decision where criminal suspicion is acknowledged, but the authorities choose not to bring the case to trial after taking various mitigating circumstances and cooperative efforts into account.
Demystifying the Administrative Delay
The legal dispute dates back to the establishment of the company in October 2015, which originally operated under different names before rebranding as Hope Project in September 2022. Under South Korea’s Popular Culture and Arts Industry Development Act, any corporate or individual entity managing entertainment figures must officially register with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Because the company operated without registering for several years, local authorities initiated an investigation. In response, Lee Ha-nee’s representatives clarified that the omission was entirely unintentional. The agency explained that they had not fully grasped the specific registration requirements for a personal project entity handling her specialized artistic, musical, and non-acting endeavors.
Upon identifying the administrative oversight, Hope Project actively cooperated with experts to rectify the paperwork and successfully secured its official registration certificate in October of last year.
Looking Ahead with a Fresh Slate
While the Seoul Gangnam Police Precinct initially referred the case to prosecutors in December, the prosecution’s latest decision to suspend indictment essentially closes the investigation without a criminal trial. This allows the legal matter to be officially put to rest.
With the legal paperwork fully resolved, Lee Ha-nee is turning her focus back to her acclaimed acting career. Fans can next look forward to seeing her display her versatile charms on screen in the highly anticipated Netflix original series Tantara.
