When preparing for careers in medical and health fields such as pharmacy and nursing, choosing the right educational pathway is crucial. MCPHS University, specializing in health and life sciences, is meeting students and parents at the upcoming JoongAng Ilbo College Fair. Mia Park, International Admissions Counselor, will introduce various admission information ranging from the 6-year pharmacy program starting after high school to field training, admission preparation, and scholarships.
What is MCPHS?
Founded in 1823, it is a private university in the United States specializing in the health and life sciences sector, operating over 100 educational programs. It offers diverse options, including pharmacy and nursing, as well as preparatory pathways for medical and dental schools. A key feature is that students can explore their areas of interest early and build professional knowledge and practical competence through hands-on practice and field experience.
How is the 6-Year Pharmacy Program Operated?
The Direct Entry Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program consists of two years of pre-professional education followed by four years of professional pharmacy education. Because students can begin their pharmacy education directly after graduating from high school without needing to obtain a preliminary bachelor’s degree first, they can plan their academics tailored to a career as a pharmacist from the start. While building professional knowledge and clinical experience step by step, students must meet designated academic and progression requirements throughout the program.
What Field Experience Can Be Gained During Enrollment?
The Boston campus is located in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area, which is densely populated with hospitals, medical schools, and research institutions. Depending on their major, students can access various field-learning opportunities such as clinical practice, internships, and research. The advantage is that students can apply what they learn in the classroom to actual medical settings, interact with medical professionals, and build career-related experiences and human networks even before graduation.
What Should High School Students Preparing to Apply Focus On?
It is important to build a solid foundation in science subjects such as biology and chemistry while simultaneously developing communication and critical thinking skills. We recommend exploring what the profession entails through volunteer work, community involvement, and healthcare-related experiences. In your application, rather than just listing grades and activity records, it is best to genuinely convey the experiences that sparked your interest in the medical and health fields alongside the goals you wish to achieve in the future.
What Scholarships and Financial Aid Are Available for Freshmen?
We offer academic achievement-based scholarships for incoming freshmen, and depending on a student’s situation and eligibility, additional support opportunities such as housing assistance or government student loans can also be explored. Because available assistance varies by individual, it is best to consult with the student financial aid department early in the application process to verify eligibility and conditions.
What Information Can Be Obtained at the College Fair Booth?
You can learn about educational programs in various health fields such as pharmacy, nursing, and optometry, and directly ask questions regarding admission requirements, scholarships, and the application process. If you are interested in science, medicine, and helping others, a wider variety of pathways are open than you might think. We want to help students find the path that matches their interests and goals, and materialize it into an actual college admission plan.
If you are interested in the medical and health fields but have not yet decided on a major and educational pathway, it is well worth stopping by the MCPHS booth at this JoongAng Ilbo College Fair to consult directly on curricula and admission preparation methods.
