RM SFMoMA exhibition, featuring 142 private collection pieces from BTS leader RM, has officially opened its preview in San Francisco. Titled ‘RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me,’ the special exhibition runs ahead of its October 3 opening, blending Korean heritage with global modern art. Kwon Geun-young reports from the scene, featuring a special review by POSTECH professor Woo Jung-ah and RM’s full curator speech.
The upcoming exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMA) breaks traditional boundaries of era, culture, and geography by pairing Korean masters like Whanki Kim and Yun Hyong-keun with Western icons like Mark Rothko and Wayne Thiebaud. Marking his debut as a co-curator, RM collaborated with museum curators over two years to select 36 pieces from SF MoMA’s vast collection that resonate with his personal tastes.
SF MoMA Director Christopher Bedford noted that many of the museum’s own pieces chosen for the exhibition were rarely seen even by staff. Divided into seven unique sections, the exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the private world of Kim Nam-joon away from his global superstar persona. From blue-toned monochrome paintings to intimate displays of everyday domestic art, the collection reflects a deeply personal journey of questioning, collecting, and finding solace in art.
