The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has deployed enhanced police forces around the 5th Avenue and F Street intersection under a strict new initiative dubbed ‘Operation Last Call.’ Designed to intervene before illegal acts escalate into violent confrontations, this targeted operation aims to restore public safety to the city’s premier nightlife neighborhood.
Rising Crime Rates and Zero-Tolerance Policy
According to police reports, misdemeanor and disorderly conduct incidents in the Gaslamp Quarter last year reached triple the numbers recorded in Pacific Beach, another major San Diego entertainment hub. Excessive drinking, group disturbances, and assaults have become increasingly common, with attacks against on-duty police officers surging by 172% over the past two years. During this special enforcement period, the SDPD has increased patrol numbers, deployed dedicated tactical teams, and enforced a strict zero-tolerance policy for public drinking and violent disturbances.
City Leaders Back Enhanced Public Safety
SDPD Chief Scott Wahl emphasized that recent lawlessness threatens the safety of residents, visitors, and officers alike, noting that additional resources will remain deployed until the area stabilizes. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also expressed strong support for the crackdown, highlighting the Gaslamp Quarter’s role as a vital symbol for the city where citizens and tourists should feel safe.
