As persistent inflation continues, purchasing used goods has firmly established itself as a leading money-saving strategy among South Korean consumers. secondhand shopping is on the rise as households look for practical ways to trim their living expenses.

According to a recent Recommerce Report released by the online recommerce platform eBay, 81% of respondents reported buying secondhand products over the past year, surpassing the global average of 76%.

Furthermore, 55% of respondents stated they purchase used items at least once a month, which is higher than the global average of 47%.

Cost reduction was cited as the primary driver behind this trend. About 84% of respondents included saving money as one of their top three reasons for buying used goods, while 46% selected it as the most important factor.

The most sought-after items in the secondhand market include everyday apparel, shoes, home goods, and media-related products.

Younger demographics showed the highest engagement in secondhand purchases. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, 46% indicated they buy used items every week or every two weeks, compared to an overall average of 28%.

Additionally, 53% of individuals in the 18-29 age bracket plan to increase their secondhand purchases over the coming year, significantly outperforming the overall average of 36%.

Consumers generating extra income through the sale of used goods are also on the rise. Approximately 40% of surveyed individuals reported having experience selling secondhand items online.
