A South Korean student was recently caught using AI-powered smart glasses cheating tactics during an essay exam for Yonsei University’s 2027 early admissions cycle. This marks the first time a cheating attempt involving smart eyewear has been officially detected in a major domestic college entrance examination.

AI-Powered Glasses Used to Solve Math Exam

According to Yonsei University and education authorities, a proctor caught a student wearing smart glasses during the natural science and integrated mathematics essay exam held at the Sinchon campus in Seoul. The proctor immediately confiscated the eyewear during the test, and the student later admitted to utilizing the device to assist with the exam.

The incident has sparked widespread concern among educators and test administrators, highlighting the vulnerabilities of traditional exam security measures against advanced wearable technology. While similar incidents have previously occurred in standardized language tests like TOEIC and TOPIK, this is the first confirmed case during a university admissions essay test.

Rising Threats to Academic Integrity

Experts explain that these smart glasses integrate with artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT and Gemini. Users can quietly trigger a built-in micro-camera on the frame to capture exam questions, while the AI projects step-by-step solutions or answers directly onto the transparent lenses.

Education authorities are rushing to implement stricter preventive measures. The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) has officially banned smart glasses from test sites for upcoming examinations and plans to expand the distribution of radio-frequency detectors capable of identifying unauthorized electronic devices.
