SNAP benefits increase 2027 will bring higher maximum monthly food assistance payments to low-income households beginning Oct. 1.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefit levels for fiscal year 2027. In California, the program is known as CalFresh.
Under the new rates, the maximum monthly benefit for a one-person household will increase by $8, from $298 to $306.
A family of four will be eligible for a maximum of $1,023 per month, up $29 from $994, while the maximum for an eight-person household will rise by $52, from $1,789 to $1,841.
The increases average approximately 2.9%.
SNAP benefit levels are adjusted each October to account for changes in food prices and inflation.
Actual payments, however, vary depending on factors including household size, net income and housing expenses, meaning many recipients receive less than the maximum amount.
According to USDA data, the average SNAP benefit as of May was $187.48 per person and $344.51 per household.
Approximately 37 million people nationwide currently receive SNAP benefits.
The new fiscal year 2027 benefit levels will take effect Oct. 1 and remain in place through Sept. 30, 2027.
