A severe storm system bringing thunder and lightning is set to drench Southern California, with heavy downpours expected to impact the LA County area starting tonight, prompting urgent warnings for residents. Flood advisories have already been issued for select coastal areas.

Expected Rainfall and Timing

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) on the 21st, the expected rainfall from this storm system is estimated between 1 to 1.5 inches, with rain continuing through the 22nd. The NWS has warned that localized areas could experience flash floods with rainfall exceeding 3 inches.

Flood Advisories and Affected Areas

Flood advisories are in effect from 4 PM on the 21st to 4 PM on the 22nd, focusing primarily on the Malibu and Santa Monica coastal regions. Impacted areas also include Pacific Palisades and Topanga.

These regions could see torrential downpours reaching 0.5 to 1 inch per hour, significantly increasing the risk of street flooding and river overflow. The NWS urges residents in flood-prone areas to monitor weather updates closely and take thorough precautions to prevent damage.

Weather Outlook and Clearing

Meanwhile, the probability of thunderstorms across the LA County area is currently hovering between 20% and 30%. The rain is expected to transition into scattered showers by the morning of the 22nd before gradually clearing out from the western regions by the afternoon.
