The Social Security COLA 2027 increase has been officially set at 3.6%, according to an announcement made by the Social Security Administration (SSA) on October 14.
This adjustment will raise monthly benefit payments for approximately 72 million Americans starting in January, including retired workers, survivors, and disability beneficiaries.
Who Qualifies for the 2027 Benefit Increase?
Roughly 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will also benefit from the adjustment, with the new payment amounts taking effect on December 31. Combined, about 76 million individuals will be impacted by the changes.
For retired workers, the average monthly retirement benefit is projected to increase by about $75. Data from the SSA shows that the average monthly payment for retired workers will rise from $2,095 before the increase to $2,170 by January 2027, though actual individual amounts may vary.
Key Factors Behind the 3.6% COLA Adjustment
The 3.6% increase is 0.8 percentage points higher than the 2.8% adjustment seen this year, marking the largest bump since the 8.7% rise in 2023. The Cost-of-Living Adjustment is determined annually using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers during the third quarter, designed to help beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power amid rising inflation.
Beneficiaries can check their updated payment amounts starting in late November through their personal “my Social Security” online accounts. Those who do not receive online notifications will receive a notice by mail in December.
Additionally, the maximum earnings cap subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 this year to $192,300 for 2027.
