Actor Son Suk-ku recently opened up about the difficult period in his career when he seriously considered quitting acting, sharing his honest journey on television.
Appearing as a guest on the SBS variety show ‘Whatever You Can Give – Secretary Jin’, Son Suk-ku joined hosts Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-gyu for an entertaining conversation.
Son Suk-ku opened up about the process of gaining recognition relatively late in his career. Having made a name for himself in his mid-to-late 30s, he revealed, “I was right on the verge of quitting when one project finally succeeded, and that’s why I’m still doing it. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have kept going.”
When Lee Seo-jin asked him what the first successful project was, Son Suk-ku mentioned the drama ‘Sense8’, directed by the Wachowski sisters, who also directed the film ‘Matrix’.
Son Suk-ku explained that the director of the project held auditions in Korea, and he joined the cast through that audition process. This became the turning point that gave him the opportunity to continue his acting career.
Later, Son Suk-ku gained widespread public recognition through the JTBC drama ‘My Liberation Notes’ and also drew massive popularity by starring in the film ‘The Outlaws 2’. He added that as his acting career continued to thrive, he even began filming commercials.
Commenting on this, Lee Seo-jin sympathized with his explanation, saying, “When two or three projects hit back-to-back, it really solidifies your position.” This highlighted how achieving success in one project followed by continuous attention in others helped him establish a firm foothold as an actor.
On this day, Son Suk-ku also caught attention by naming the MBC drama ‘Damo’ as his life-defining drama. He shared nostalgic memories from his college days in Chicago, where he used to rent Korean videotapes in Koreatown to watch the series.
