The beloved salad buffet chain Souplantation, which once enjoyed massive popularity in California, has announced its plans to return to the state after a six-year hiatus.

Sweet Tomatoes Hints at California Comeback

Sweet Tomatoes, the sister brand of Souplantation, posted a photo of a ‘Welcome to California’ sign on Instagram with the caption ‘Stay tuned,’ fueling speculation about their impending reentry into the market. While the exact location and opening dates have not yet been disclosed, company representatives have hinted that official announcements will soon follow on social media, with many fans speculating a return to Southern California based on teaser videos.

The Rise and Fall of Souplantation

Founded in San Diego in 1978, Souplantation offered an all-you-can-eat spread of fresh salads, soups, and pizza. Promoting a healthy and casual dining experience, the chain eventually expanded to 97 locations nationwide, mostly concentrated in California, while operating under the name Sweet Tomatoes in other states. However, the parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2016 and was later acquired by a private equity firm. The final blow came during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the self-serve buffet model struggled under health restrictions, forcing all remaining locations to shut down.

Enduring Popularity and Future Outlook

Even after Souplantation vanished from the culinary landscape, consumer demand for its unique style of casual dining remained strong. Similar alternatives, such as Soup ‘n Fresh in Rancho Cucamonga, emerged to fill the gap. If the brand officially reopens its doors in California, it will mark an eagerly anticipated return approximately six years after its complete shutdown.
